When Western Michigan University’s Haworth College of Business shared an update about two of their student-athletes, it captured a moment that every parent dreams of—watching their children excel both academically and athletically on a national stage.
My sons, Grant and Hampton Slukynsky, had helped lead the Western Michigan University Bronco Hockey team to its first-ever Frozen Four appearance, and seeing their achievements recognized by their college made this proud parent’s heart soar.

The Haworth College of Business shared their journey in their social media announcement:
From #WMU Haworth to the Frozen Four ⚡🔥🏒. Grant and Hampton Slukynsky are skating into the national spotlight—and taking the lessons they’ve learned at Western Michigan University with them.
The brothers from Warroad, Minnesota, have helped lead Western Michigan University Bronco Hockey to its first-ever Frozen Four appearance. Off the ice, they’re equally impressive in the classroom.
Grant, a finance major and team center, says business skills like problem-solving and adaptability directly translate to his game. “On the ice, you have to read plays and make quick decisions. In business, it’s the same—you have to collaborate, analyze, and execute.”
Hampton, a goalie and pre-business major, agrees. “Being a goalie requires quick decision-making, mental toughness, and staying composed under pressure … WMU Haworth has a great reputation, and I know what I’m learning is setting me up for success.”
Both brothers credit their professors, teammates, and Bronco Nation for supporting their many victories this season. Their biggest game yet is tonight—and they’re ready.
As a parent, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing your children recognized for their dedication both in the classroom and on the ice.
